Minda Files opens Adobe Illustrator .ai files in your browser as the PDF inside them: write and highlight on the artwork, draw, add shapes, fill in and sign, show or hide its layers and retype a word, then download it as an .ai that Illustrator opens, or as a PDF. Nothing is uploaded, and it is free with no account.

How to edit an AI file online

  1. Drop the .ai file on the page, or press Choose a file.
  2. Write, highlight, draw, add shapes or sign where you want; open Layers to show or hide the file’s own layers.
  3. Double-click a word to retype it, or drag a picture or a block of text to move it.
  4. Download it as an Illustrator file or as a PDF.
  • Opens an .ai file saved with Create PDF Compatible File, Illustrator’s default: its artwork opens as the PDF inside it. A file with PostScript only is refused, with how to save one that opens.
  • Downloads an .ai that Illustrator opens with your marks on the artwork, or a PDF. The .ai is the PDF Illustrator reads, without Illustrator’s private copy of the artwork, so Illustrator opens it as that PDF.
  • Stays in Illustrator editing the drawing’s own paths, anchor points and colors.

Questions

Can I open an Illustrator file without Illustrator?

Yes. Drop the .ai file on Edit Illustrator file in Minda Files: it opens in your browser as the PDF it carries, ready to mark up, sign and download.

Can I change the drawing itself?

Not its paths. Minda Files does not edit an Illustrator drawing’s paths, anchor points or colors. You can retype its words, move a picture or a block of text, show or hide its layers, and write, draw and sign on top.

Why does my .ai file not open?

It holds PostScript only, with no PDF inside. In Illustrator use File, Save As and tick Create PDF Compatible File, or save a PDF of it, and open that.

Is Minda Files free?

Yes. Every tool and the editor are free, with no account needed. Signed out, files open up to 10 MB; signed in on the free plan, up to 50 MB; the Files plan and Pro open files up to 256 MB.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The tools and the editor run online in your browser; your file is not sent to a server. Only Ask AI sends what you ask, and the text of the file it needs, to Minda AI, and PDF to PowerPoint a picture page only when you turn on Read picture pages with Minda AI.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Minda Files works in your web browser: open the page, drop a file and it opens there.
